Updated Record Book http://www.okanagancollegebaseball.ca/?p=2368 http://www.okanagancollegebaseball.ca/?p=2368#respond Thu, 20 Jun 2019 16:47:41 +0000 http://www.okanagancollegebaseball.ca/?p=2368 Continue reading ]]> The record book has been updated and there are some new faces entering the ranks of the Coyotes best.   Recently drafted pitch Trevor Brigden set new standards for wins and strikeouts, along with fellow pitcher Wyatt Hummel who set the new standard for E.R.A with a 0.87.

Davis Todosichuk continued to add his name to the lengthy list of records he holds.  He now sits with the top 4 spots in stolen bases and covers a variety of other top 10 spots.  Jake Fischer, Brendan Luther and Todosichuk land at 5th, 6th, and 7th respectively on the top batting average list.  The record of .414 still remains the gold standard set by Bryce Wilkie in 2009 when he went 29-70.  Fischer also lands in 2nd place on the RBI list when he blasted in 32 runs in 2019,  2018 graduate Jared Frew sits on top with 35.

Davis Todosichuk

Brendan Luther

There were also several teams records set in 2019.  The 21-7 record is the best regular season record in Coyotes history, which followed up 2018’s record breaking 20 win season.  The 2019 group also set new records in hits (275), Average (.283), E.R.A (3.21) and stolen bases with 96 in 120 chances.

Coyotes fall to UFV in CCBC Championship Series http://www.okanagancollegebaseball.ca/?p=2349 http://www.okanagancollegebaseball.ca/?p=2349#respond Sat, 18 May 2019 03:48:25 +0000 http://www.okanagancollegebaseball.ca/?p=2349 Continue reading ]]>

The Okanagan College Coyotes fell one game short in their pursuit to defend their CCBC Championship. After a solid early showing in the tournament, the Coyotes looked like they ran out of gas even though their opponent had to play 2 more games than them.

In the first game of the tournament, OC would play the 7th seed Vancouver Island University Mariners. The game would quickly get out of hand as the Coyotes would score 9 runs in the first inning, 3 in the 2nd, 1 in the 4th and 13 more runs in the 6th before the mercy rule was put into effect. OC batters would be walked 14 times and would be hit by pitch 8 times. OC would score 26 runs on just 11 hits. Junior Wyatt Hummel threw 5 solid innings allowing just 3 hits before giving way to Sophomore Alex Dawson who would finish the game throwing 2 innings. The Coyotes would win 26-0 in the opener.

Next OC would face off against the University of Calgary Dinos and OC would again come out swinging. OC would put up 5 runs in the 1st innings and would not look back. Freshman Nolan King and Seniors Jake Fischer and Jeremy Buckley would lead the way with 3 hits each and Sophomore Nate Postle would add two hits of his own. King and Buckley would drive in 3 runs each and Fischer and Postle would add 2 RBI each. Senior Trevor Brigden would throw 5 strong innings allowing one unearned run on two hits and he struck out 6. Freshman Brett Reid would throw the last two innings allowing no runs and no hits. OC would win by mercy rule 12-1.

Jake Fischer

By winning the first two games, the Coyotes set themselves up with a change to go to the finals and would need to get past Thompsons Rivers University Wolfpack. TRU edged out OC to take the regular season title despite having identical 21-7 records. OC would send Sophomore Chris Wyslobocki to the mound and he would deliver a lights out performance. After surrendering 1 run and two hits in the first, Wyslobocki would not allow another hit the rest of the game. He would go all 9 innings allowing just 1 run on two hits, striking out 9 and did not walk a batter. OC would tie the game in the 3rd and take the lead in the 4th making the game 2-1. In the 8th innings OC would put up 5 runs to make the final score 7-1. Senior Davis Todosichuk and Freshman Tyler Monks both had 2 hits and a stolen base. King added two hits of his own and had two RBI.

Chris Wyslobocki

With the win, OC would head to the best of three final, and would wait for the winner between TRU and the UFV. UFV had lost their first game and would take the long road to the final. They would beat TRU 9-4 to set up the rematch of last years final.

In game one, OC would come out quick scoring a run in each of the first 3 innings including a long homerun by Fischer. With the score 3-0, UFV would take the lead in the top of the 6th by scoring 4 runs, taking advantage of some shaky OC defense. Errors would be the determining factor in the game as OC would commit 5, a couple that were very costly. Sophomore Jesse Poniewozik would throw well up until the 6th inning. he would throw 5.1 innings allowing 1 earned run on 3 hits, struck out 6 and walked 5. Freshman Austin Brown would take over and would throw 2 innings allowing just 1 earned run on 4 hits and struck out 3. Freshman Brendan Luther, Todosichuk and Fischer all had 2 hits. OC could not complete the comeback as they would lose game one of the final by a score of 6-4.

Brendan Luther

Game two would need some heroics to determine a winner. UFV would jump out to a 3-0 lead before the Coyotes would put up 4 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning. After trading some runs, the score would be 5-5 going into the bottom of the 9th. With one man on Freshman Massimo Peranio blasted a mammoth 2-run homerun to left centerfield to walk it off. This would force a 3rd a final game.

Massimo Peranio

The final game would not be kind to the Coyotes as it seemed they had run out of gas. UFV would take an early lead and not look back. They would score 11 times in the first 5 innings, while OC could only manage two runs. UFV would induce the mercy rule after the 7th inning and would take the Championship with a 13-2 final.

Overall the season was a success for the Coyotes. They posted a 25-9 record and set many team records.

The Okanagan College Coyotes made sure to bring their bats with them to Kamloops this weekend, as they were able to start off about as hot as possible—pummeling Vancouver Island by a football score of 26-0 in a 7-inning mercy. Starting Pitcher Wyatt Hummel coasted through five innings of work, allowing three hits and striking out 2 to earn the win. Reliever Alex Dawson closed out the last two innings, striking out 3 to complete the shut out.

The bats were hot for the Coyotes, as 13 different Coyotes hitters recorded an RBI, three coming to First Basemen Nate Postle, as well as three for Second Basemen Mike Duwyn, and Third Basemen Noah Wood-Jolivet. The Coyotes recorded 11 hits in the game, as well as 14 walks and 8 hit by pitches that contributed to the lopsided score.

Immediately following the game, the Coyotes squared off against the University of Calgary Dinos. The Coyotes hot start of the tournament carried over to game two, as they hit through the order for the third time in the afternoon putting up 5 runs in the first inning—being capped off by a 2-run double by Postle. That was all the Coyote pitching staff would need, as Pitcher of the Year Trevor Brigden allowed one run in 5 innings of work, striking out 6 in the 12-1 7-run mercy. The offense was spread around once again in the victory as six different Coyotes recorded an RBI—being capped off by First Team All-Conference Catcher Jake Fischer (3 for 4 with 2 doubles and 2 RBI), Left-Fielder Jeremy Buckley (2 for 3 with 3 RBI) and Designated Hitter Nolan King (3-4 with a 2B and 3 RBI).

The Coyotes square off with first seed Thompson Rivers University Saturday at 1 PM for the bid to the final 3-game-series out of the winner’s bracket. Tune in to the Live Stream that can be found at–  gotru.ca.
