The Okanagan College Coyotes are eagerly awaiting their first games of the 2019 Canadian College Baseball Conference season that will put them up against the new team in the league, The Edmonton Collegiate Baseball Club. The Coyotes are continuing to train hard in their indoor facilities in preparation for their 2018 CCBC National Championship defense. The games start on Saturday March 23rd at 12pm, at historic Elks Stadium.

Senior Trevor Brigden

The team is looking solid with a deep pitching rotation, led by 2018 Pitcher of the Year, senior Trevor Brigden. The big right hander had an incredible 2018 season posting 0.87 ERA with a 4-0 record and striking out 57 batters in 31 innings. Last season Brigden was primarily coming out of the bullpen but will be the teams Ace starting pitcher in 2019. Also looking to be an impact on the mound are Junior Wyatt Hummel, Sophomores Chris Wyslobocki and Jesse Poniewozik, and Freshmen Nick Lee, Austin Brown and Nic Taylor. Hummel was primarily a reliever last season posting a 3.65 ERA in 24.2 innings. Wyslobocki is coming off a stellar freshman season with a 2.37 ERA, striking out 39 batters in 57 innings. Poniewozik would see most of his 17.2 innings out of the pen, but would still have a 3-0 record and a 3.06 ERA. Lee, Brown and Taylor have all shown well this spring and have propelled themselves into important roles.

Senior Davis Todosichuk

On the offensive side, the Coyotes will be led by Seniors Davis Todosichuk and Jake Fischer. Todosichuk led the Coyotes in batting with a .371 average and also led the league in Doubles with 14, stolen bases with 22 and runs with 35. Fischer, who had a somewhat down year in 2018, batted .235 with 14 RBI. In 2017 he batted .340 with 4 HR and 21 RBI. Fischer will look to repeat what he did in his Sophomore season. Also looking to contribute on the offensive side are Junior Noah Wood-Jolivet, who batted .340 with 23 RBI in 2018 and Sophomore Trevor Mlait, who also hit well batting .325. Rounding out the offense are Senior Jeremy Buckley, Senior Eric Junnola, Sophomore Dylan Faulkner, Freshman Brendan Luther and Freshman Nolan King. All have shown that they will be big contributors coming into the 2019 season.

Overall the team looks solid. Pitching will have lots of depth and will give the team a good chance to win every game. The offense will be dangerous in all aspects of the game. Good speed, lots of contact, and guys with pop with make this group very dynamic. On defense, the team will be tough to get balls by. When all these aspects come together, the Yotes will be a tough group to beat.

Vegas/AZ Trip Recap http://www.okanagancollegebaseball.ca/?p=2160 http://www.okanagancollegebaseball.ca/?p=2160#respond Thu, 28 Feb 2019 05:51:27 +0000 http://www.okanagancollegebaseball.ca/?p=2160 Continue reading ]]>

The Coyotes are now bac from their spring trip which took them down to Las Vegas and Arizona to play some of the top Junior College programs in the country, including #6 College of Southern Nevada. The trip lasted twelve days starting in Las Vegas for four games, then travelling to Arizona for three games and then back to Las Vegas for three more. As usual, the Coyotes are in tough during the trip as it is their first time back on the field since October and are playing teams that have been on the field for over a month.

The Coyotes would get off to a slow start on the trip and the rust would show when they faced off against CSN, losing the first game by a 10-0 score. Their second game of the trip would be against College of Southern Idaho, a team they played well against in the past. CSI would win a high scoring game by a score of 17-9. Game three would see OC again play CSN and the outcome would again go in CSN’s favor, 5-0. The last game of the first leg in Vegas would see CSI come out on top 6-1. Struggles at the plate and on the mound would be the difference in the first four games of the trip.

The Coyotes would jump on a bus and head to Arizona in hopes to learn from their first four games and look to improve their play. The first game would have them go up against Chandler-Gilbert Community College, and OC would finally get a favourable outcome, winning 7-4. The Coyotes would put together a solid game on the mound and on offense to show a glimpse of what they are capable of. The next two game would see the Coyotes play against Ottowa University – Arizona, a new NAIA program. The first game would be a close contest until OUAZ would score six runs in the 7th and five runs in the 8th to win 13-4. The second game would see OUAZ walk off in the 9th inning on an error, the final score would be 5-4.

OC would then return to Las Vegas to play a three game set against CSN and would look to put up more of a fight against the tough Junior College program. Game one would see Sophomore Jesse Poniewozik throw a solid five innings giving up 2 runs and striking out 4. Freshman Nic Taylor would throw 3 innings in relief and would only give up one run. The OC offense would once again be shut out by the CSN pitchers and could only muster four hits. The second games would see OC come out early and take a 2-1 lead after 4 innings. Sophomore pitchers Chris Wyslobocki would battle some command issues early, but would get through 4.1 innings, allowing 2 runs and striking out four. Sophomore Justin Lanigan would take over on the mound and would get out of the inning. He would throw 2 innings, allowing 3 runs before being replaced by freshman Tyler Monks. Monks would only allow one hit in .2 innings of relief. The Coyotes offense had 5 hits including three from Senior Jake Fischer who has a homerun shy of the cycle. The last game of the trip had the Coyotes feeling the fatigue of playing in their 10th game of the week. They would fall behind early and would love the game 8-2.

This trip is always a highlight of the year and is a great starting point for the Coyotes in the spring. It gets the team to understand where they are at, where they are exceeding and most importantly where they can improve heading into the 2019 Canadian College Baseball Conference Season. The team is excited for the product they have on the field and are looking forward to defending their 2018 Championship.

2019 Coyotes – Infielders http://www.okanagancollegebaseball.ca/?p=2154 http://www.okanagancollegebaseball.ca/?p=2154#respond Fri, 15 Feb 2019 19:00:54 +0000 http://www.okanagancollegebaseball.ca/?p=2154 Continue reading ]]>

Last but not least, to round out the summary of the 2019 Coyotes ball club are the infielders.

The Coyotes Infield saw three starters graduate following the 2018 Championship season. As a result, a new nucleus of players will be relied on to carry the weight offensively and contribute on defence.

The Coyotes infield will be led by two-time All-Conference Infielder Erick Junnola, coming off a solid 2018 campaign. Junnola batted .284 with 8 doubles, and routinely made sparkling plays up the middle. Also returning for the Coyotes is sparkplug and reigning All-Conference First Team infielder, Noah Wood-Jolivet, who has contributed to the team’s success primarily as a Utility player in recent years. However, this year he will primarily man the hot corner, and hope to improve upon his impressive 2018 offensive stat line which includes a .340 Batting Average, and was second on the team with 32 hits, and tied for second with 23 RBI.

Sophomore Dylan Faulkner, Freshman Nick Lee and Brendan Luther will look to compete for playing time at Shortstop. All three showcase above-average arm strength, athleticism and defensive ability, and embrace leadership roles on the infield.

Sophomore first basemen Damian Obrigewitch and Elias Erdman and freshmen Massimo Peranio and Hayden Misfeldt will look to add power with the bats and play solid defensively. All four will look to compete for playing time.

Rounding out the returners is Sophomore infielder Nate Postle. Postle showcases a high baseball IQ in tandem with a quick bat and sneaky power from the right side.

In addition, freshmen second basemen Kaden Dore and Mike Duwyn round out the talented young infielding group. Both will look to contribute to the teams success in any way they can, and will look to put pressure on returning players both offensively and with the glove.

This concludes our 2019 Coyotes player introduction. Look for updates on how the Coyotes fare during their Spring trip in Las Vegas and Arizona.

The next installment of the 2019 Coyotes will cover the group patrolling the Outfield.

The Coyotes are returning the main part of their outfield in Seniors Davis Todosichuk and Jeremy Buckley, and also Sophomore Trevor Mlait. Todosichuk once again leg the Coyotes in batting average in 2018, hitting .371. He has been at the top of the Coyotes batting order the last few seasons and will once again be looked at to lead the way for the offense. Buckley had an up and down 2018 campaign and will look to be more consistent. Mlait brings tremendous speed to the lineup and will look build on a great freshman season.
