Coyotes Start Fall 3-1 After Opening Weekend


 

The Okanagan College Coyotes opened up their fall schedule this past weekend facing off against the local Okanagan Athletics Premier Baseball Team and the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack. The Coyotes would finish the weekend with a promising 3-1 record.

On Saturday, the Coyotes would play a double header against the Athletics and this would give the OC coaching staff their first look at their freshmen class. In game one, the OC offense would take off scoring 15 runs on 14 hits and would capitalize on 12 walks. Tyler Monks would lead the way with two doubles and 4 RBI, Nolan King would be 2-3 with a triple and 3 RBI and Ethan Gray would also go 2-3 with a double and scored 3 times. On the mound, Jayden Clayton would throw 2 hitless innings, striking out 3. In relief Brennen Flodin would throw 2 scoreless, Alex Andres would throw one inning allowing 2 runs and Nic Taylor would finish the game shutting done the Athletics offense.

In Game two, the OC pitching would again keep the Athletics offense at bay but only allowing 3 runs on 2 hits. Ethan Loran would throw 2 scoreless innings allwing just one hit and striking out 3. Brett Melanson would throw a scoreless 3rd before giving the ball to Noah Zenkewich. Zenkewich would struggle in his first innings allowing 4 walks to score 2 runs and allowing another run in his second inning but would not allow a hit and would strike out 4. Derek Powell would take over for the 6th and 7th and would shut down the A’s, striking out 5 batters. On the Offensive side, OC would be led by Brennan Flodin and Alex Andres, both went 3 for 3, with Flodin driving in the winning runs. Massimo Peranio would also have a big game going 2 for 2 with a double.

On Sunday, OC would play fellow Canadian College Baseball Conference team the TRU Wolfpack. In game one, OC would erupt for 19 runs on 17 hits including a big 10 run 7th inning. Senior Davis Todosichuk would go 2 for 4 with 3 RBI, Sophomore Trevor Mlait would go 3 for 5 with two double and 4 RBI and Jeremy Buckley was 2-3 with a double, a RBI and 3 runs scored to lead the OC Offense. Senior Jake Fischer was also 2-5 with 3 RBI. On the mound, Jesse Poniewozik would throw 3 solid innings allowing just 1 hit, and striking out 3. Sophomores Dylan Koenig and Nick Lee would limit the TRU offense before Senior Trevor Brigden shut the door in the 9th.

In Game two, the tides would turn as the OC offense would be shutout, and the OC pitching staff would struggle in an 11-0 loss.

Next up for OC will be a Tuesday night game against the Athletics. They will then travel to Chilliwack to set up a rematch of the Championship game against the University of Fraser Valley Cascades.
