OC Splits in Chilliwak vs UFV

On Wednesday, the Okanagan College Coyotes travelled to Chilliwack to face of with the University of Fraser Valley for the first time since the 2018 Canadian College Baseball Conference Championship game. OC would come away with a split winning 14-2 and losing 6-5.

In game one, Senior catcher Jake Fischer (Edmonton, AB) blasted his first homerun of the fall coming way of the grand slam fashion. Fischer would be 1-4 in the game with 5 RBI. Senior outfielder Jeremy Buckley (Kelowna, B.C.) would continue to swing a hot bat, delivering a 2-2 performance, drawing 3 walks and cashing in 2 RBI and a double. Freshman short stop Brendan Luther (Etobicoke, ON) would hit his way to an impressive 3-4 effort in his first collegiate start, also collecting 2 RBI. On the mound, Sophomore Jesse Popniewozik (Edmonton, AB) would have another solid pitching performance, working 3 innings, allowing just one hit and striking out 3. Freshman Nic Taylor would follow with another 3 solid scoreless innings, also only allowing 1 hit. Freshman Ethan Loran (Badlands, AB) would throw two more scoreless innings for the Coyotes before Senior Wyatt Hummel (Kelowna, BC) would shut the door for the victory.

In game two, OC would fall behind early and could not complete the comeback in the 7th. Freshman starting pitcher Jayden Clayton (North Vancouver, B.C.) threw two innings giving up 3 runs on 5 hits. Freshman Derek Powell (Abbotsford, B.C.) would throw two innings in relief surrendering 3 runs, two of them earned on just one hit. Sophomore pitchers Nick Lee (Victoria, B.C.) and Justin Lanigan (Cloverdale, B.C.) would both throw one inning in relief and would not surrender a run. Offensively the scattered only 5 hits but would take advantage of 7 free passes by the UFV pitchers, scoring 3 of those free passes.

Next up for OC will be their Alumni weekend games which will begin tonight, weather dependent, starting at 7pm. On Saturday they will again play the Alumni at 7pm, and then on Sunday will take on UFV down at Elks Stadium.
