The top two teams in the CCBC faced off this weekend as the Okanagan College Coyotes played the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack in a home and home series. The teams split both double headers with two games going to extra innings.
On Thursday, the Coyotes travelled to Kamloops to play the first place Wolfpack. In game one of the double, the OC bats would strike first as they would score two runs in the top of the first, and two in the top of the second. From then on thought, OC would be shutout the rest of the game. TRU would score 2 in the bottom of the first courtesy of a 2-run homerun and then would score 4 in the bottom of the third and two more in the bottom of the 4th. Starting pitcher freshman Nic Taylor would struggle to be consistent in his first college start only going 2.1 innings allowing 6 runs on 2 hits and 3 walks. Sophomore Gavin Barrett would come in relief and would go two innings allowing 2 runs on 2 hits and 4 walks. Sophomore Justin Lanigan would relieve Barrett and would throw 3.2 innings allowing no runs on 2 hits giving OC an opportunity to come back but would fall short. Offensively, Senior Jake Fischer and Freshmen Brendan Luther and Chace Davidson would all have 2 hits and Senior Jeremy Buckley would have a 2-run RBI double. OC would fall to TRU by a 8-4 score.
OC would look to give TRU their first loss of the season in the second game of the double header. This game would be a pitchers duel as the teams would go into the 11th innings without a run being scored. Freshman Starting Pitcher Nick Lee would throw a gem going 8 innings allowing just 2 hits and striking out 9. In relief, Senior Trevor Brigden would not allow a hit in 3 innings and would strike out 4 to earn his 3rd win of the season. The lone bright spot on offense for the Coyotes was Sophomore Elias Erdman who was 2 for 4. In the top of the 11th inning, Freshman Ethan Loran reached on a dropped strike three and would be moved to second base by a sac bunt from Sophomore Trevor Mlait. Next up, Luther would hit a single moving Loran to 3rd. After a strikeout and an intentional walk, Loran would come in to score on a passed ball. Coyotes would finally give TRU a loss winning 1-0.
On Sunday, OC would host TRU and would look to win a series. The first game of the double header would again not go the Coyotes way as it would take 13 innings to decide the winner. Walks and errors would put OC in a hole early as they would go down 6-0 after just 3 innings. Sophomore starting pitcher Jesse Poniewozik would struggle to be consistent and would fall victim to 3 errors allowing 2 walks and a hit by pitch to score. Poniewozik would go just 1.1 innings allowing 4 runs, just one earned, on 6 hits and 3 walks. In relief, Freshman Brett Reid would throw 3 innings allowing 3 runs, 1 earned, and would also walk 3. Sophomore Alex Dawson would relieve Reid and would have another solid outing going 2.2 innings allowing no runs and no hits, striking out 4. Brigden would again look to give the Coyotes a chance for a win as he would throw 3 innings allowing just 1 run, walking 2 and punching out 6. Finally on the mound after Brigden would be Freshman Jayden Clayton who would suffer the loss after throwing 3 innings, allowing 2 runs on 2 hits and striking out 4. While OC was down early, they would claw back into the game as they would score 5 runs in the bottom of the 4th to make the score 6-5. TRU would score another run in the top 0f the 5th and OC would continue to chip away before tying the game and eventually having a 8-7 lead. TRU would tie the game and would eventually score 2 runs in the top of the 13th. Multiple Coyotes had 2 hits games including Freshman Tyler Monks, Freshman Massimo Peranio, Freshman Nolan King, Senior Eric Junnola, Buckley and Mlait. Buckley would continue to swing a hot bat and would drive in 2 runs for the Coyotes. OC had many chances to win the game but could not capitalize. They would fall 10-8 in the 13th.
In the final game of the series, OC would look to even the series and would get a tremendous outing by Sophomore pitcher Chris Wyslobocki. Wyslobocki would throw all 7 innings allowing no runs, 3 hits and would strikeout 12. The Coyotes bats would come alive as they would score 10 runs on 11 hits and would take advantage of 7 walks. Buckley would add to his big series as he would have another two hits, both doubles, and would have 3 RBI. Senior Jake Fischer would also have 2 hits and an RBI, and Monks and Luther would both have 2 hits.
Next up for the Coyotes will be a home series against the Vancouver Island University Mariners. This will be a big series for OC as they will look to chance down first place in the CCBC. Saturdays games will start at 3pm and Sundays games will start at 10:30am.
