The Mariners are coming off a season where they finished tied for last place with a record 8-18 and were bounced out of the National Championship tournament with two straight losses, one at the hands of the Coyotes in a 26-0 lopsided victory.
They return some veteran players for 2019-2020 in Senior infielder Liam Ballance who frequented Elks this summer against the Kelowna Falcons as a member of the Cowlitz County Black Bears of the West Coast League. Also returning is Tanner Hess, another senior infielder from Victoria, BC. Both players will be key to the Mariners success this upcoming season. On the mound the Mariners will have some work to do as they finished the 2019 campaign with a team ERA of 5.42 which was 5th in the CCBC and also led the league in walks.
The Coyotes are coming off a sweep of the Kelowna Fall Invitational tournament, in which they wons games over Okanagan Athletics, Chilliwack Cougars, North Shore Twins, and the Victoria Mariners. Despite the Coyotes facing high school opponents, the team played fairly consistent over the weekend.
“We played alright over the weekend, our pitchers were around the strike zone consistently, and you combine that with facing some young hitters it usually is a recipe for success.” adds Head Coach Geoff White.
“We don’t really worry about who we are playing, we just try and go play our game and control what we can control and if we do that well we typically have good results.”
This weekend schedule will kick off Friday October 11th at 2:30pm and 5:30pm followed by Saturday’s matchup at 11:00am and 2:30pm.
“We are coming close to wrapping up the fall schedule, we are looking forward to this weekend and seeing how we stack up against a conference opponent. It will also be a great opportunity to continue to see some of our new faces compete against opponents we will face .” finishes White
